On February 26, 2024, a cooperation agreement was signed between two companies from Słupsk: Wodociągi Słupsk and Engie EC Słupsk. The goal of this joint project is to effectively utilize the energy potential of treated wastewater and biogas from the wastewater treatment plant in Słupsk in the process of decarbonizing and modernizing the district heating system of the city of Słupsk and the region. As a result of the planned investments exceeding PLN 70 million, heat pumps will be built along with high-efficiency cogeneration, a heating pipeline connecting the treatment plant with the district boiler house at św. Klary z Asyżu Street, and energy storage facilities. Modern heat recovery technologies combined with the expertise of local companies will make it possible to cover over 10% of the total thermal energy demand of the city of Słupsk from the installation located at the Słupsk treatment plant. Local emissions will decrease by over 12,000 tons of CO2 compared to the current state, which is equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by more than 21,000 trees throughout their entire life cycle. Cooling the treated wastewater by approximately 4°C after it undergoes the technological process and before it is discharged into the Słupia River is an action that enhances local environmental value.
The heat obtained this way is classified as renewable energy (RES) and is not subject to emission charges. This will have a positive impact on heating tariffs. This cooperation is also beneficial for the customers of the water and sewage company, as the revenues resulting from the cooperation with the district heating enterprise will reduce wastewater treatment costs at the Słupsk treatment plant.
Modern technological solutions and the developed cooperation mechanisms are of interest to energy sector representatives from all over Europe, classifying this venture as a flagship project for the heating, energy, and water sectors alike. Part of the planned investment tasks is intended to be financed by the National Recovery Plan (KPO). A relevant application has been prepared by Wodociągi Słupsk and will be submitted to the KPO in March this year.
