“Wodociągi Słupsk” Sp. z o.o. hosted a two-day conference held on June 23–24, 2022, aimed at summarizing investments completed between 2014 and 2022, which were co-financed by external funds, including those from the European Union. On the second day of the conference, the issues and technologies that were the subject of the project “Utilization of waste heat from biogas cogeneration in the district heating system of the city of Słupsk” – co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Regional Operational Programme of the Pomorskie Voivodeship for 2014–2020 – were presented.
This project was implemented by the Słupsk water utility within the framework of the Słupsk Bioenergy Cluster and aims to develop a local model of distributed energy, under which local enterprises and energy communities should shift as broadly as possible from the position of an “industrial energy consumer” to that of an “industrial auto-producer” or a business prosumer. The project, based on the combined production of heat and electricity from biogas and the utilization of waste heat, serves as an element stimulating the development of local energy, power generation, and distribution. It increases the efficiency of the district heating system of the city of Słupsk, reduces the emission intensity of energy production, and positively affects the costs of municipal services in the region. The diversification of generation sources improves heat transmission efficiency, introduces an element of competitiveness, and ensures better utilization of energy potential.
It should be emphasized that for several years, as “Wodociągi Słupsk” and within the initiatives of the Słupsk Bioenergy Cluster, we have been building a renewable energy community in Słupsk, among others defined in RED II. We utilize the energy potential of municipal infrastructure and local renewable energy sources. We are preparing for new challenges and wish to continue utilizing funds from the Recovery Plan for Europe. The meeting in Słupsk provided an opportunity to present our path toward achieving the development priorities included in virtually all EU strategic documents.
This two-day conference offered an opportunity to exchange experiences among industry professionals from the wastewater, energy, and water management sectors alike. Among the highlights presented were the alternative possibilities for electricity and heat recovery applied at the Słupsk wastewater treatment plant, achieved through the Company’s investments in energy infrastructure.
The conference culminated in a field visit to the Słupsk wastewater treatment plant, which attracted great interest from the conference participants.
